Two National Guard members shot near White House, suspect in custody: police

Two members of the West Virginia National Guard were shot Wednesday in Washington, D.C., close to the Farragut Metro Station and within walking distance of the White House, authorities have confirmed.

D.C. Metro Police said one suspect is in custody.

West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey initially said that the soldiers had died, but later retracted his statement.

"We are now receiving conflicting reports about the condition of our two Guard members and will provide additional updates once we receive more complete information," Morrisey posted on X. "Our prayers are with these brave service members, their families, and the entire Guard community."

The White House was placed on lockdown following the shooting. President Donald Trump is not on site.

Attorney General Pam Bondi and FBI Director Kash Patel have both been briefed and are receiving continuous updates, according to reports.

Trump shared a post on Truth Social in the wake of the shooting and expressed solidarity with the victims, as well as dismay at the incident that unfolded earlier near the White House.

"The animal that shot the two National Guardsmen, with both being critically wounded, and now in two separate hospitals, is also severely wounded, but regardless, will pay a very steep price," Trump said.

"God bless our Great National Guard, and all of our Military and Law Enforcement. These are truly Great People. I, as President of the United States, and everyone associated with the Office of the Presidency, am with you!"

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
